Discrimination against people with disabilities and age discrimination is a major issue in our industry. It is simply not fair that the older generation, such as our parents, are partially excluded from social life or that they are dependent on others for digital government transactions because they have not acquired the skills to use these systems. If the European Accessibility Act delivers on its promises, digital systems will become more accessible and easier to use.
What is the EAA?
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) was introduced by the EU in 2019. The aim is to improve the accessibility of products and services for all people with disabilities and seniors throughout the EU.
Products also include digital products such as:
- Websites
- Mobile Apps
- E-Commerce and Webshops
- Digital Tools with Payment Functions
- Booking Systems and Course Registrations
The requirements of the EAA must be met by June 28, 2025.
Who is affected by the EAA?
The EAA applies to all (not only public, but also private) companies and organizations in the EU or those that offer products or services to customers in the EU.
This means that companies based outside the EU but trading in the EU must also comply with the EAA.
Company size restriction:
At least 10 employees and an annual turnover of more than €2 million.
What needs to be done?
Digital accessibility essentially exists when four requirements are met.
- Perceivability
- Usability
- Understandability
- Robustness
